Port Hedland revetment works advance

The project involves renewing degraded sections of the inner harbour revetment wall through the installation of new rock armour, designed to protect the wharf structure from coastal erosion and improve cyclone resilience.

The final phase covers revetment sections from Berth 1 to Berth 3 and between Berth 3 and BHP’s Nelson Point Berth A, building on previous upgrades at Berth 3 and the Nelson Point Tug Haven.

“Upgrading critical infrastructure like the Eastern Harbour Revetment ensures the Port of Port Hedland remains safe and resilient to extreme weather events,” said Ports and Regional Development Minister Stephen Dawson.

“This project is another example of the Cook Government’s commitment to investing in world-class port infrastructure that supports trade growth and regional development in Western Australia.”

An A$8.6 million (€4.85 million) contract for the works has been awarded to MGN Civil, recognised for its experience in delivering large-scale marine and rock armour infrastructure projects. Construction is expected to be completed within the next 12 months.

“The upgrade delivers long-term protection for our coastline using durable materials designed to withstand future cyclones,” said Pilbara MLA, Kevin Michel.

“It is fantastic to see government and industry working together to deliver infrastructure that supports local jobs and strengthens our regional economy.”

The government has committed A$565 million (€330 million) to support the port’s expansion and enhance its capacity to export lithium and copper concentrates.
