Port Hedland seafarers centre under way

The AUS$21 million project, led by Pilbara Ports, will deliver a purpose-built facility designed to support the wellbeing of thousands of seafarers visiting the port each year. Construction has been awarded to Benchmark Construction and Building, providing a boost to local employment and the Pilbara economy.

“Commencing construction on this project is a pivotal moment for Pilbara Ports, our community and the many passionate supporters of the Seafarer’s Centre who work in the port,” said Pilbara Ports chief executive, Samuel McSkimming.

“It is the extraordinary effort of seafarers which connect the Pilbara to the world, contributing to Western Australian prosperity and security.”

The centre will include a range of amenities aimed at improving rest, recreation and connectivity for visiting crews. Facilities will feature communal lounges, kitchen areas, quiet rooms, a library, meditation and prayer spaces and a shared chapel. Seafarers will also have access to Wi-Fi, SIM cards, and nearby local amenities.

“This project has been carefully designed to ensure the centre is practical, fit-for-purpose and responsive to the needs of seafarers visiting Port Hedland,” explained Ports Minister Stephen Dawson.

“By providing home comforts at this new facility, we are supporting the welfare of thousands of seafarers who visit the port each year and play a role in the prosperity of our State.”

The Port of Port Hedland is a critical hub for global trade, handling around 43% of the world’s iron ore exports in the 2024–25 financial year. Approximately 150,000 seafarers pass through the Pilbara region annually, many spending extended periods away from home.
