WATCH: LA celebrates waterfront revitalisation
The Port of Los Angeles is celebrating a decade of progress under its Public Access Investment Plan (PAIP), a programme dedicated to revitalising the LA Waterfront and supporting the harbour communities of Wilmington and San Pedro.
Launched in 2015, the PAIP channels 10% of the port’s operating income into public access projects, tying the success of cargo operations directly to community investment.
“I’m so excited about the work that we’re doing with the Public Access Investment Plan, and the fact it is a community grassroots effort,” said Port of Los Angeles executive director Gene Seroka.
“As this port thrives, we are able to invest more into the community. And when we have this great community pulling in the same direction, the sky is the limit.”
Completed projects under the initiative include the Wilmington Waterfront Promenade, San Pedro Town Square and Promenade and several road enhancements aimed at improving access to the highly anticipated West Harbor, set to open in 2026.
Looking ahead, the port plans to invest an additional US$400 million over the next decade in new public access initiatives and ongoing project upkeep. Later this year, new developments will be announced for construction within the next five years.
Spanning 400 acres and attracting over a million visitors annually, the LA Waterfront has seen more than US$1 billion in investment since 2005, transforming it into a vibrant community and tourist destination just 25 miles south of downtown Los Angeles.
“The Public Access Investment Plan took projects that the port had on our capital project list and made them a reality,” said port director of waterfront and commercial real estate Mike Galvin. “We have been able to build out streets and promenades that bring more visitors and accessibility directly to the water’s edge.”
