Air Products secures LNG contract
Norwegian industrial gas supplier, Air Products, has won a NOK35m (US$6m) contract with Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co Ltd (DSME), to supply its nitrogen generator sets for use on the large scale Australian offshore Ichthys LNG Project.
Air Products’ nitrogen generator uses advanced membrane filtration technologies to obtain pure nitrogen from clean air. The company says its generator sets are a vital link in the LNG safety chain due to the risk of explosions during the loading and unloading of a vessel.
Tom Cantero, CEO and managing director of Air Products Norway, said: “There is growing global demand for LNG and we feel that the positive trends within this segment will accelerate in coming years. We feel that our specially developed membrane-based nitrogen generator sets are setting the industry standard for use in the LNG sector.”
The Ichthys Project, which is being carried out by Australian oil and gas producer, Inpex, will have an initial capacity to produce 8.4m tonnes of LNG per annum. When launched in 2017, it will also have an initial capacity to produce 1.6m tonne of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and around 100,000 barrels of condensate per day at peak.
The offshore plant consists of a drilling unit and a production vessel, both of which will be equipped with nitrogen generator packages from Air Products.
It will contribute towards meeting Japan’s LNG requirements, supplying 70% of its 8.4m tonne annual production to Japan through a pipeline.
