Alfa Laval unveils latest generation scrubber (

The previous version of PureSOx has been operating at sea since 2009 and according to the company, is among the most prominent scrubbers on today’s market, but this latest generation is said to be more compact and offers greater flexibility.

“PureSOx 2.0 retains the well-documented PureSOx strengths,” said René Diks, marketing and sales manager, exhaust gas cleaning, Alfa Laval.

“What it adds are new advances that reinforce the system’s position at the leading edge of marine scrubber technology. Every PureSOx system ever installed is in use and operating within ECA limits,” he added.

Suitable for a wider range of vessels, PureSOx 2.0 has been enhanced to offer new placement possibilities and lower installation costs, as well as the option of powder dosing in closed-loop mode.

The diameter of the absorber, which forms the bulk of the scrubber body, has been reduced by around 15%, while the control system occupies half the space of its predecessor. Modular construction has allowed the unit to be distributed across three skids, for easier installation and greater flexibility in design. It can also handle boiler exhaust as well as engine exhaust, making it possible for a single scrubber to supply the needs of main engines, auxiliaries and boilers.

Alva Laval says the scrubber itself attenuates noise in PureSOx 2.0, meaning it can be positioned before the silencer, rather than after as previously required, reducing back pressure and the lower mounting improving stability.
