Eco Wave Power contract for Gibraltar
Gibraltar’s government has signed its first purchase agreement for the provision of renewable energy with Israel’s Eco Wave Power.
Eco Wave Power will initially provide 0.5MW of energy to the east coast of the country with a view to expand to a full 4.5MW if the project is successful.
A spokesperson from Eco Wave Power told Greenport: “The energy will be transferred to the grid. At first phase to the low voltage grid and in the second phase in to the high voltage grid.
“Gibraltar’s Government is interested in producing 15% of its energy consumption from renewable energy. Our 5MW power plant in Gibraltar will represent this 15%.”
The agreement forms part of the Gibraltan government’s overall plan for increasing the level of renewable energy in the country with a view to moving away from fossil fuels and towards more sustainable forms of energy.
Eco Wave Power is an international wave power developer. It uses uniquely shaped buoys to capture and convert wave energy at low cost.
For Gibraltar, the buoys will be specifically designed in accordance with its particular wave climate. They will have built in storm protection and shock wave protection mechanisms.
Construction on the buoys will start in 2014 and operation is due to begin in 2015.
