Electric straddle carrier delivery

Eurofos, situated at the Port of Fos, is investing heavily in future growth. The new straddle carriers will expand and partly replace the terminal’s existing fleet of equipment with added reliability and lower environmental impact.

Nicholas Gauthier, CEO, Eurofos, said: “The new electric straddle carriers will help us cut fuel and maintenance costs. They will ensure we can continue to provide our customers with good productivity and high service quality.”

Kalmar’s low maintenance straddle carriers are capable of stacking 40 tonne containers over three levels and comply with the latest exhaust emission regulations.

The order will also include Kalmar’s SmartFleet process automation solution which provides real-time analysis on on-board performance data helping to reduce downtime. In the future, there is also the possibility that the software will be retrofitted to the port’s existing fleet of straddle carriers as well.

Going forward, Maija Eklöf, Kalmar, told GreenPort it is approaching the straddle carrier market with the same strategy set in place in late 2013.

She said: “The first patch of hybrid machines are being built up and we have taken a limited amount of orders in 2014. The major share of machines are diesel-electric machines. In the future, we expect that the share of hybrid machines will drastically increase.”
