Fjord Line wins efficiency award
Norwegian ship owner and ferry operator, Fjord Line, won the Energy Efficiency Award at this year’s Nor Shipping exhibition for its two passenger ferries, ‘Stavangerfjord’ and ‘Bergensfjord’.
Both ferries are equipped with LNG based power and propulsion systems supplied by Rolls-Royce. This includes Bergen gas engines for each vessel; powering a highly efficient Promas integrated rudder and propeller system.
Neil Gilliver, president merchant, Rolls-Royce, said: “The aim of the Nor Shipping Energy Efficiency Award is to honour vessels that have contributed greatly towards increasing energy efficiency in the industry. Rolls-Royce is proud to be a part of this ground breaking, and now award winning project and we look forward to see the Fjord Lines vessels in service later this summer.”
The use of gas fuelled engines means that Nitrogen Oxide (Nox) emissions are reduced by around 90%, while Sulphur Oxide (Sox) and particulates emissions are negligible. These emissions comply with the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) Tier II environmental legislation, due to come into force in 2016.
Stavangerfjord and Bergensfjord are currently in the final stages of construction at Bergen Fosen shipyard.
Fjord Line says they will be the first international service passenger ferries in the world to run on pure LNG engines.
