GB£7m electric gantry cranes investment
Six electric rubber tyre gantry (RTG) cranes have arrived at a UK port as part of its container terminal expansion.
Project Pilgrim is a GB£33m upgrade to ABP’s Immingham Container Terminal at the Port of Immingham, and these Kalmar cranes, ordered from China, make up over GB£7m of investment of the GB£33m total. They are expected to reduce fuel consumption by 95%, significantly reducing emissions from equipment use.
Simon Bird, regional director of ABP Humber, said: “This is a hugely exciting time for containers in the Humber Ports. The investment in this infrastructure is key to ABP’s expansion plans at the Humber Container Terminal on the Port of Immingham and we have already seen huge success from similar investment in our Port across the Humber in Hull.”
He added: “The electric rubber tyre gantry cranes will also reduce fuel consumption by 95% and will therefore compliment our efforts to reduce emissions.”
The cranes have been discharged using ship-led facilities and will be used to stack containers.
The cranes will now go through several stages, including modification works and mapping, ready to be commissioned for work at the end of February.
