GREEN EFFORTS discusses LNG and onshore power
Last week, GREEN EFFORTS (Green and Effective Operations at Terminals and in Ports) organised a Workshop, entitled “Greener Ports – What to expect from technologies”, at the premises of Bremen Chamber of Commerce.
The workshop aimed at discussing and exchanging ideas for improvement as well as providing a communication platform for stakeholders. More than 40 participants attended, representing port authorities, port and terminal operators, non-governmental organizations, research institutes to other EU funded projects which are related to the topic of port and terminal sustainability.
Dr. Jürgen Sorgenfrei of IHS Global, one of the GREEN EFFORTS partners, welcomed the workshop participants and elucidated the focus and the findings of the GREEN EFFORTS project achieved so far. During the workshop, presentations of different projects highlighted efforts and challenges of greening ports and terminals and the potential of LNG and onshore power provided to ships allowing them to shut off their own energy production.
The five main “lesson-learnt” from the workshop are the following:
a. Emission reduction is an important topic and on the top of the agenda for port and terminal stakeholders
b. Timing of development or implementation of environmental measurements is an important factor to maintain societal confidence
c. Ports in fact are only small contributors to total emissions along the supply chain however improvement in ports will provide a positive impact to the community around the port area as well as to the whole supply chain.
d. There are many ongoing projects with comparable targets but have different scope and focus e. Communication between various stakeholders and projects can provide synergy for achievement of targets.
