Green equipment on the agenda

The Port Equipment Manufacturers Association (PEMA) Forum will bring together key players from the port equipment and technology arenas, including ABB, Cavotec, Kalmar and Konecranes.

Specifically geared towards future equipment design will be the session on “New directions in equipment design, operational and energy efficiency.”

Panel members will include Siro Brieda, Owner, Brieda Cabins, Luciano Corbetta, Group Market Unit Manager Ports & Maritime, Cavotec, Ryan Hertel, Director of Business Development, Phoenix Products Company
and Tero Kokko, VP Horizontal Transportation, Kalmar.

Hot on the agenda will be unscripted debate on current and future environmental challenges. One talking point will be whether diesel-electric equipment will be phased out as alternative fuels take over.

No doubt this is a topic which Kalmar, will be interested in. It recently received an order from New Zealand’s Port Otago for the supply of two diesel electric Kalmar straddle carriers. They are the first diesel electric straddles for the port and they’re designed to provide high performance and productivity at medium size terminals.

Another key talking point will be on the options available for cold ironing infrastructure.

ABB and Cavotec have been working together in a bid to highlight the benefits of ship to shore power systems as an alternative to ship’s auxiliary engines at berths. They co-hosted an outreach seminar at the Port of Ystad recently and the topic will no doubt figure highly on the agenda at the forum.
