Long Beach launches more green projects
The Port of Long Beach has launched two grant-funded environmental projects at the Century Villages of Cabrillo homeless rehabilitation complex in West Long Beach.
The complex was awarded grants under the port’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Grant Programme. One US$161,455 grant went towards a solar energy system that will provide 150,000kW hours of clean electricity annually, and another US$170,000 grant for an urban garden to “beautify and capture harmful emissions”.
Doug Drummond, president, Long Beach Board of Harbour Commissioners, said: “The Port of Long Beach is proud to support Century Villages through green and sustainable projects that raise the quality of life for its residents as well as the greater Long Beach community.”
For the solar energy grant project, a solar power system was installed on the carport structures next to the Casa de Cabrillo building. The port says the project will help reduce GHGs emissions, as well as bring long-term electrical cost savings.
Around 100 trees were planted for the urban garden, which will help to sequester carbon, reduce GHG emissions and improve air quality.
