Maersk Line hits CO2 target

Søren Skou, CEO, Maersk Line, said: “Maersk Line’s energy efficiency improvements in 2012 have led to a remarkable achievement which we are very proud of – we have met our 25% CO2 emissions reduction target eight years early.”

The company announced that it will now aim for a 40% CO2 reduction per container kilometre by 2020. It says this will be achieved mainly through the Triple-E vessels, which Maersk is due to receive in mid 2013.

It also says it has seen an increasingly sustainable performance from its customers who have been requesting sustainability data and engaging in more discussions on the issue.

Mr Skou added: “We welcome and encourage this interest and hope to see much more of it in 2013. An increased demand for shipping services with a strong sustainability profile will help drive industry wide change, thereby enabling more sustainable global trade.”

As part of its 2012Sustainability Progress Update, Maersk is also working towards container sustainability and has introduced a new policy to only buy new container with sustainability floorboards. Around 30% of the company’s fleet is now equipped with sustainable floorboards.
