Malawi River Basin programme
Global engineering and development consultancy, Mott MacDonald, has been appointed to work on the first phase of the Shire River Basin Management Programme by Malawi’s Ministry of Agriculture.
The project is being implemented to improve land and water management and protect and enhance the river ecosystem, while protecting the livelihood of locals in the area.

Malawi’s Shire River Basin is the country’s single most important water resource supporting food production, transport, energy, tourism, agriculture and fisheries.
Mott MacDonald will be responsible for the catchment management component which will aim to rehabilitate four catchments – Upper Lisungwi, Upper Wamkulumadzi, Kapichira Falls and Chingale – covering a combined area of approximately 133,000 hectares. The consortium will develop methods to reduce soil erosion, utilise soil conservation methods and improve and diversify livelihoods.
The world-financed project will be completed in a consortium with Centre for Development Management from Malawi and LTs from the UK. It is due for completion in 2018.
