MOLs futuristic solar carrier

A car carrier design that creates zero emissions while at berth, including during loading or unloading operations, is being pursued by OSK Lines (MOL).

MOL's Ishin-I: a fuel-efficient concept ship that harnesses renewable energy for lower carbon emissions

Featured on its latest Environment and Social Report, the futuristic ISHIN-I carrier will achieve its clean power through a hybrid drive that combines a conventional diesel with solar panels and large-capacity lithium ion batteries.

The electricity used for the electric propulsion will be generated with renewable solar energy, while the energy required while in port and during loading and unloading is provided by electricity stored in the LI rechargeable batteries while at sea.

Further, the ISHIN-I also represents an evolutionary step in terms of a vessel with reduced wind resistance, drag and optimised propulsion.

The ISHIN-II, a cargo and passenger ferry development, proposes the use of cold ironing while in port and LNG fuel to give a much cleaner exhaust.
