Samskip extends Scandinavian efficiency

Rail shuttle services connecting Duisburg, Germany to Malmö, Sweden have been added, as of 1 March 2015. The Samskip Multimodal Rail Terminal in Duisburg already handles a large number of rail shuttles to and from Scandinavia, but Samskip says the inclusion of shuttle services to/from Malmö will substantially increase its capacity in Sweden.

“The new train to Malmö will ensure that we keep our quality standards at the highest level and expand our scope towards the Southern region of Sweden,” said Henk van Dieren, CEO of Samskip Van Dieren Multimodal. “By connecting a new train from Duisburg to Malmö with Göteborg as its final destination, we will enhance efficiency and add incredible value to our existing multimodal network in Sweden.”

“By using our multimodal connections we are able to save time, fuel cost and toll, and at the same time decrease CO₂ emissions,” he added.

With a 17-hour transit time and six weekly departures northbound and southbound, Malmö will be linked directly to the Duisburg area, for on-connections to the rest of Europe, either by barge, rail, shortsea or road.

The shuttle is open to all types of intermodal loading units such as 45ft containers, 13.6m (mega) trailers, reefers, and tank and bulk containers. Traction will be provided by Hector Rail. Samskip Van Dieren Multimodal expects to increase the frequency to two departures per day in the near future.
