Solar pilot project at Yusen Terminals
In early May Yusen Terminals Inc (YTI), a wholly owned subsidiary of NYK Line, announced completion of the first tenant-installed solar project at the Port of Los Angeles (POLA). The pilot system was installed in cooperation with NYK Trading Corp and has been designed by SeaPort Energy.
It is expected to produce 11,806kWh/yr using only 96 modules, representing emission reductions equivalent to planting 5.7 acres of trees each year. The “CIS” (copper, indium and selenium) solar photovoltaic cells produced by Solar Frontier KK are of environmentally friendly design, using no silicon. They provide the highest photoelectric conversion efficiency of all thin-film modules on account of their excellent absorption of available light. YTI’s pilot project has been installed adjacent to the wharf to demonstrate the durability of the CIS solar modules in a salt-water/maritime environment. YTI was the first, and is the only, container terminal to maintain ISO14001 certification which was obtained in 2003. It was also the first to implement ship-to-shore Alternative Maritime Power which has been used since November 2007. YTI’s project also supports POLA’s five-year commitment to install 10 megawatts of solar power within the port complex.
