US beach restoration work to begin
Construction of shore protection and beach restoration at Misquamicut Beach in Westerly, Rhode Island, is set to begin this month.
MZM Construction Company is said to have been chosen to carry out the work, and is scheduled to begin this month and be completed by 1 June.
The work is part of a US$3.1m contact awarded by the US Army of Corps of Engineers, New England District, in March 2014.
Misquamicut Beach is a Rhode Island state beach owned by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management.
It was originally constructed by the government in late 1959 and early 1960 as a beach erosion control project, which involved the direct placement of sand fill along 3,250 feet of beach to form a 150ft wide berm at elevation +57.5ft mean low water (MLW).
Shore protected works were damaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, leaving the beach’s “design profile” ruined.
