Video highlights plight of wildlife
A short film that shows how marine birds that have been poisoned or choked by rubbish thrown overboard from ships demonstrates what the industry is doing to its seaways.
Not so much shocking as sad, it has been produced by the port of Rotterdam and highlights biologist Jan Andries van Franeker’s calculation that the waste in the North sea is building up in excess of 20,000 tonnes per year.
However, it is not all gloom. The movie, which was released and handed out during the last meeting of the IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee, also shows initiatives like Rotterdam’s: the port recycles all but 7% of the waste it receives from incoming vessels – right down to the cleaning water.
