Wärtsilä to retrofit Color Line scrubbers
Wärtsilä is to retrofit its open loop scrubber systems on three Color Line cruise vessels.
The scrubber contract is for the company’s SuperSpeed I, Color Magic and Color Fantasy vessels, which sail between Norway and Denmark and Norway and Germany.
Each vessel will be fitted with four systems designed to rid the ships of harmful sulphur oxide (SOx) emissions and particulates.
Mr Jan Helge Pile, senior vice president, marine and technical, Color Line Marine, said: “Color Line sees environmental issues as a priority and the use of Wärtsilä exhaust gas cleaning systems on another three of our vessels is a significant step towards our goals in this respect.”
The systems, work by allowing the SOx formed in the exhaust gas to react with seawater to form sulphuric acid. The natural alkalinity of the seawater then neutralises the acid to allow it to be safely discharged at sea.
This will enable the vessels to comply with current and anticipated environmental legislation in line with Emission Control Areas (ECAs).
This order follows on from a similar one placed in June 2013 to retrofit Color Line’s SuperSpeed II ferry.
