LR upgrades container stowage tools

Lloyd’s Register (LR) has rolled out a major upgrade to its container stowage solutions, delivering new digital and engineering tools designed to cut container loss and improve operational performance while safeguarding cargo.

The enhanced package brings together upgraded BoxMax and Roll Design Assessment notations with the latest LashRightUX and the newly introduced RollRight digital platform.

“Optimum stowage remains one of the most important challenges in container shipping,” explained Nick Gross, LR’s Global Containerships Segment director.

“These tools combine proven engineering with digital capability and operational reality to give vessel operators clearer insight, faster decision-making and better risk management.

“With these enhancements, we’re equipping the industry with tools that improve safety and reliability, while helping operators run more efficiently and achieve maximum utilisation.”

The launch comes against a backdrop of rising concern over containers lost at sea. According to the World Shipping Council, 576 containers were lost in 2024, more than double the number reported the previous year.

LR’s latest enhancements focus on addressing these risks through improved modelling, faster calculations and ship-specific roll management. Updates include more detailed motion modelling and new algorithms to calculate safe stack loads, allowing BoxMax-notated ships to carry increased cargo without compromising safety.

The RDA notation, together with RollRight, provides crews with real-time insight into rolling risks based on actual sea states, enabling early warnings and corrective action against synchronous and parametric rolling.

LashRightUX adds a redesigned interface and enhanced visualisation tools to simplify stowage analysis and support collaboration across the industry.

Alongside the technical upgrades, LR is leading the Lashing Exchange Format Consortium, aiming to standardise container securing data and streamline classification and approval processes.
