NYK and SpaceX Link
Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) has undertaken a trial of SpaceX’s satellite service, Starlink, on one of its ships.
SpaceX is an Elon Musk company and in July 2022 it announced its satellite connectivity service to the maritime industry as soon as it received authorisation from the US Federal Communications Commission.
Starlink uses low-orbit satellites to offer faster communication feedback, whereas the traditional process for ship-to-shore links are reliant on high orbit satellites, thereby leading to slower speeds.
