Port of Hamburg trials 5G
The Port of Hamburg has provided Deutsche Telekom and Nokia with an arena for their successful 5G field test.
For the past 18 months, the approximately 8,000 ha site has served as a test bed for EU project 5G-MoNArch which aims to prove that 5G can meet industry’s requirements.
“We have gained valuable experience, which we have also shared with the port industry and other partners at several events,” said Hambug Port Authority’s (HPA) project manager, Hendrik Roreger.
“Thanks to the experience gained, we now have a clear technological advantage in the Port of Hamburg. When 5G officially starts, we would be ready to implement even complex applications here,” he added.
Network Slicing
The project focused on the new technology concept ‘Network Slicing’. Under 5G, there will no longer be a ‘one size fits all’ network but multiple virtual networks running simultaneously on the same common infrastructure. This enables networks, the so-called ‘slices’, to have different characteristics tailored to meet the specific requirements of a particular application or user group.
Three use-cases with different network requirements were tested in the port. Firstly, sensors enabling real-time monitoring were installed on three ships from the HPA subsidiary Flotte Hamburg. The second trial involved the Port Road Management Center of the HPA remotely controlling traffic flows in the port and the third example tested high bandwidth availability.
The EU’s Horizon 2020 research framework programme is funding 5G-MoNArch as a Phase II project of the 5G Infrastructure Public Private Partnership. A second phase in Turin will deal with multimedia applications.
