Smart VTS improves Thames port safety

The state-of-the-art VTS will provide safer and more efficient port operations across 95 miles of the tidal Thames – one of the world’s busiest and most complex waterways.

Unique challenge

Thames river navigation demands advanced port vessel traffic management to safely coordinate vessel movements through narrow, congested and challenging sections.

The new system improves situational awareness and decision-making, helping operators guide vessels with greater precision while supporting environmental performance and operational reliability.

Built on Kongsberg Norcontrol’s latest Foresight platform, the VTS system integrates radar, AIS, CCTV and other sensor data into a single, intuitive interface.

Advanced radar tracking improves clarity and stability, even around complex river bends, enabling early incident detection, improved traffic coordination and real-time communication with vessels.
