Trelleborg unveils smart berthing system

Trelleborg Marine & Infrastructure has launched a new berthing monitoring technology designed to enhance the safety, efficiency and sustainability of port operations around the world.

The Smart Docking Aid System (SmartDAS) equips operators with accurate, objective data, enabling smarter decision-making across both day-to-day operations and long-term strategic planning.

“Modern port operations require intelligent solutions that provide actionable insights for both immediate operational decisions and long-term strategic planning,” said Richard Hepworth, business unit president at Trelleborg Marine & Infrastructure.

“SmartDAS delivers comprehensive data that empowers operators to make informed decisions across all aspects of berthing operations.”

SmartDAS detects vessels up to 200 metres away, capturing real-time metrics such as distance, velocity and approach angle. This data is stored securely in the cloud and integrates with Automatic Identification System data for vessel recognition.

The system boosts safety with configurable alarms that warn when approach parameters exceed safe limits while mobile LED displays provide real-time feedback to crews.

Beyond safety, SmartDAS supports operational improvements through automated reporting, session replay and data analysis, aligning with PIANC WG 211 recommendations to improve infrastructure design and fender system efficiency. It also contributes to sustainability by preventing over-design, extending infrastructure life and supporting preventative maintenance.

Real-world applications, such as installations in Australia and California, demonstrate SmartDAS’s adaptability and effectiveness in reducing damage, establishing accountability, and optimising port performance.

The system is also a core component of Trelleborg’s SmartPort platform, which integrates assets for unified communication and decision-making across ports.
