Eco tariff discounts for Brazilian port callers

In March, the Port of Açu formalised its implementation of the Environmental Ship Index (ESI), the ranking that classifies vessels that exceed the emission standards issued by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Ships which perform above environmental standards, including the levels of greenhouse gases emissions, now have access to different port tariffs, with discounts up to 10%.

“The adoption of ESI by Açu reinforces our commitment to participate in the global effort to reduce emissions through an incentive for a key player in the maritime chain, the shipowners. It is a joint effort to promote the use of cleaner technologies,” said Tessa Major, director of international business at the Port of Açu and vice-president of IAPH in South and Central Americas.

The first vessel to call at the port and receive the incentive was SEA Brasil, operating for Equinor.

With this initiative, Port of Açu joins a list of 62 global ports that have adopted the incentive mechanism. ESI is a project led by the World Ports Sustainability Program (WPSP), linked to the International Ports Association (IAPH).

Port of Açu is home to the world’s largest offshore support base. It has had more than 13 thousand calls since 2014. In the last year it had 3,245 vessel calls.
