Transport efficiency project makes headway
A project which aims to cut CO2 emissions in ports by reducing truck transports in ports and their hinterland has made progress in its second partner meeting.
The Port Authority Network of Northern Tyrrhenian Sea hosted the meeting of the EU Interreg Europe-funded Smooth Ports project, which is specially focused on optimisation of administrative procedures in order to save unnecessary transport within the port.
Lead partner of the project is Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Ministry of Economy, Transport and Innovation. Other project partners include Port of Nantes Saint-Nazaire Authority and Port of Hamburg.
The planned ‘One-Stop-Shop’ facility at the Port Authority Network of Northern Tyrrhenian Sea’s Port of Livorno was presented at the meeting in Livorno, Italy on 5-6 February. Due to be operational by the end of 2021, the facility is designed to reduce the complexity of goods clearance for participants in the logistics chain and aid a reduction in emissions due to reduced vehicle usage.
A site visit to the Port of Livorno saw stakeholders and project partners observe the goods clearing processes and daily operations at the two main container operators – Terminal Darsena Toscana and Terminal Lorenzini and view where the One-Stop-Shop will be placed in the future.
The ‘Port Community System’, discussed during the meeting, and other IT-related solutions in the logistics and goods clearing process will also help reduce emissions, noted meeting participants.
The partners agreed to arrange another study visit to the Port of Antwerp to exchange approaches to reducing emissions.
