World’s first carbon neutral container

ICTSI-owned Contecon Guayaquil SA (CGSA) achieved the milestone after its Libertador Simon Bolivar container and multipurpose terminal in the Port of Guayaquil, Ecuador became the first port in South America to obtain carbon-neutral certification from the Ecuador Ministry of Environment and environmental ratings agency, Sambito SA in 2018.

Contecon Guayaquil SA general manager, José Antonio Contreras, highlighted that “this achievement was achieved thanks to the trust of the country’s exporting companies, which choose Contecon Guayaquil SA for their operations every day; to our allies and governing bodies, with whom we work hand in hand; to our collaborators and managers; but addbove all, to the incessant decision of our private concessionaire to invest in infrastructure, which not only allows economic and port growth, but is also friendly to the environment”.

Supporting sustainability

In this way, exporters can now certify their land and port logistics, to achieve greater competitiveness in the most demanding markets in compliance with regulations and satisfy consumer demand for products from sustainable processes.

The first container with this certification belongs to Tropical Fruit, one of the Ecuadorian banana exporters, a company that found sustainability, measurement and neutralization of its carbon footprint, a determining factor for accessing European markets.

This container was transported by sea through the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) bound for France, where it will be marketed by the Societe Iternationale D’Importation (SIIM).
