No ISPS gold for Piraeus yet

Even with the knowledge that it usually does take a while to get things done in Greek ports, with the Olympic Games underway shortly after the ISPS 1 July deadline, it seems reasonable to assume that Piraeus, gateway to the capital city of Athens, might have made the effort to comply by 1 July!

But no gold for Piraeus on this front, not even a silver or a bronze – a fail is the only mark.

The port is, however, understood to be attempting to put matters right – as would seem only right with eight cruise ships including the Queen Mary 2 docked in Piraeus for the duration of the Games. The port was recently reported as having short-listed two companies to draw up its ISPS compliance plan, the Control Risks Group and an alliance headed by the Greek company European Security.

But, on the downside again, apparently companies that do not appear in the short-list have the right to appeal their position and this is likely to delay matters even further.

Dare we suggest Piraeus requires a better “game plan?”
