Outeiro construction mothballed
All work has ceased on the construction of Terminal Portuário de Outeiro, in the city of Belém, in the Brazilian state of Pará.
The port was being built on the Caratateua river island, some 20 kilometres from Belém, with the project headed up by Companhia Docas do Pará (CDP) in partnership with groups associated with the agribulk industry, such as the Brazilian Confederation of Livestock and Agriculture (CNA).
The aim was to build a major agribulk exporting centre, with storage facilities for up to 18 million tonnes of wheat and soya.
However, the recent economic downturn and major political instability has meant that the future of Outeiro has been put in doubt, with the government seemingly unable to follow through on its much vaunted concession plan.
