P&O Nedlloyd and Voltri alliance
After weeks of speculation that ” something was cooking” between P& O Nedlloyd and PSA International in Italy, where the latter group has container handling interests, it has been announced that the two parties are to form a joint venture in Genoa which will give P& O Nedlloyd a dedicated terminal area in the Voltri Europa terminal complex.
The dominance of Maersk can be seen in figures released by Algeciras port authority covering January and February 2005 during which throughput at the port amounted to 501,514 TEUs.
The announcement provides a welcome boost for PSA which has come in for some criticism regarding the performance of its Voltri Terminal and the group’s long term commitment to it.
There is also currently an interesting debate developing in Genoa as to who should be granted operating rights for the Voltri Terminal’s sixth module now nearing completion. While the Voltri terminal’s management argue that it has the legal right to take over this module, other parties such as Contship Italia have tabled rival propositions that foresee much greater returns per metre of quay and hectare than have been achieved at Voltri to-date.
