Paranaguá costs state producers $11bn in losses

Poor administration of the port of Paranaguá during a period of government ownership led to $11.28bn in losses for local producers, particularly those in the agriculture sector, a local economist has calculated.

Speaking to a Parliamentary Enquiry Commission looking into irregularities, the economist added that other shortcomings were found in tenders issued for dredging, operational efficiency, the number of exports handled and in contracts ignoring basic legal tenants.

An alleged kickback scheme was also in operation; companies trying to denounce it reportedly ended up being persecuted.
