EDECS Group, a leading Middle East and Africa-region engineering, procurement and construction contractor, has won a strategic contract from DP World to redevelop seven operational yards at Terminal 1 of Tanzania’s Dar es Salaam Port.

Construction is already underway, with EDECS responsible for designing and constructing seven dedicated cargo and material-handling yards covering 90,000 square metres.

EDECS Group has secured a DP World contract to redevelop Dar es Salaam Port’s infrastructure and capacity

The project includes new gates, supporting utilities, advanced digital yard-management infrastructure, improved cargo storage facilities and sustainable engineering solutions aimed at boosting efficiency and long-term operational resilience.

“We are proud to extend our partnership with DP World through the Dar es Salaam Port Modernisation Project, a development of strategic importance to Tanzania and the region,” EDECS Group chair and managing director Eng. Hussein El Dessouky said.

The contractor is also implementing a comprehensive port-wide fire protection network extending beyond the original project scope, alongside a high-mast lighting system designed to improve safety, security and operational efficiency across the port’s facilities.

Dar es Salaam Port is Tanzania’s largest and busiest maritime gateway, handling more than 90% of the country’s international maritime trade. It also serves seven landlocked countries across east and central Africa, making its modernisation important to regional trade and logistics connectivity.

The port has surpassed 30 million tonnes in annual throughput as demand for integrated logistics capacity continues to increase. Terminal 1’s modernisation has already produced significant gains, with monthly container throughput reaching a record 46,582 teu in July 2026, compared with 13,779 teu in May 2024.

DP World Dar es Salaam chief executive Martin Jacob said the terminal’s modernisation remained central to improving trade connectivity and logistics efficiency across the region, while welcoming the speed of EDECS’ civil works execution.

The latest contract builds on EDECS Group’s more than three decades of experience delivering marine, port and logistics infrastructure across the Middle East and Africa.
