Turku terminal embraces digital systems

Following a competitive tender process, local technology provider Weasel Software has been chosen to supply and implement the integrated system for the terminal area.

“This is a significant contract for us,” said Juha Laurila, chief executive of Weasel Software.

“We are pleased to deliver a solution for the Port of Turku that brings passenger and traffic management together as one integrated whole. We are providing a modern system and ensuring its smooth use through long-term maintenance and support services.”

The delivery will include the passenger and traffic management platform as well as associated hardware such as gates, measuring devices and digital signage. In addition to installation and commissioning, Weasel Software will also provide ongoing maintenance and support services after the system becomes operational.

The project is designed to simplify check-in and boarding procedures for both passengers and vehicles at the new terminal, where traffic flows are expected to intensify once the facility is fully operational.

Two passenger and freight ferries will be able to arrive and depart within less than an hour, creating the need for highly coordinated operations. Automated processes and integrated traffic management tools will enable port operators to handle simultaneous departures from a single shared waiting area, reducing manual workload and improving operational efficiency during peak periods.

The Port of Turku is one of southwest Finland’s most important logistics hubs, handling more than two million passengers each year alongside around 80,000 trucks and more than 1,500 vessel calls.

Erik Söderholm, chief executive of Port of Turku, said the digital system will play a central role in delivering a more efficient port experience.

“One of the key objectives of the Ferry Terminal Turku project is to create an even smoother and more efficient port experience for passengers and shipping companies,” he said. “The passenger and traffic management system is a central element in achieving this, and we are very pleased to have an experienced and highly competent provider as the implementation partner.”

Weasel Software has previously delivered similar port traffic and passenger management solutions across the Baltic Sea region, including projects at the Port of Helsinki and Ports of Stockholm, where digital gate systems and automated passenger processing tools help manage high volumes of ferry traffic.
