Proposed terminal extension at Port of Durban

Following the submission of the TNPA’s draft scoping report in April this year, the final scoping report for the Environmental Authorisation process has been accepted by the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA).

Recent studies have shown that the current Blockwork Quay wall of Berth 203 to 205 is unstable and does not meet the minimum Eurocode 7 Safety Standards. Since the Port of Durban plays a vital role in facilitating the import and exports needs for the majority of South Africa, the project is crucial to ensure safety of the berths. The development will also enable the port to accommodate the larger sizes of the new generation of container ships.

Transnet’s project includes and upgrade of both Berths 203 and 205, the extension of Berth 205 by 170m westward and 50m seawards, the extension of Berth 203 by 80m eastward and 50m seawards, dredging of the berth channel, approach tunnel and turning circle, excavation of the trench, offshore disposal of dredge material and offshore sand mining for infill material.
