Seven-year ports investment plan for India

Ports in India are to receive ¢ 9.35m over the next seven years as part of a national development plan to help them achieve a throughput target of 20m teu.

To achieve this, it is estimated that the country will need 90 berths totalling 20 kilometres, while at present only 27 berths exist capable of accommodating major container traffic. India is expected to reach capacity crisis by 2010, when demand will outstrip port capacity.

Meanwhile, India’s Ministry of Shipping has established a high level committee to tackle lengthy delays in pushing through port projects in the country. The committee, made up of senior officials of the Ministry and bosses of some major ports, aims to pinpoint areas where the awarding of contract relating to port developmental could be speeded up.
