Zhuhai aims for Peal Delta crown
Trial operations have begun on the latest phase of developments at Zhuhai International Container Terminals (Gaolan) (ZICT) with the recent docking of the 6,350 teu APL New Jersey at one of its two new 50,000 tonne container berths.
ZICT(G) Phase II, which comprises two container berths with a total quay length of 824 metres and a depth alongside of 15.8 metres, aims to be fully operational in August 2009.
At the inaugural ceremony, attended by over 300 guests, Hutchison Port Holdings Group executive director James Tsien said the joint venture programme was on track to turn Zhuhai Port into the shipping hub of the western Pearl River Delta, providing “efficient and reliable transportation solutions to local manufacturers and cargo owners”.
The terminal now has an area of 56 hectares, and will be equipped with eight super-post-panamax quay cranes and 24 electrified rubber-tyred gantry cranes. Another development of four 100,000 tonne capacity berths is in the pipeline.
