Evyap Port’s new 360 metre quay is being kitted out with ship-to-shore cranes in order to give a better container service. Previously operating with mobile harbour cranes, the new STS units will be capable of servicing post-panamax vessels in twin-lift operations.

From it’s modest start as a soap-product terminal six years ago, Mehmet Serteser of Evyap explained: “We are looking to expand our terminal operations as more and more containerised goods flow in and out of Turkey.”

Evyap Port has requested particular features from the Kalmar units: the 52 metres outreach means the units will be able to reach across 18 container rows onboard.

Further the PPX Twinlift cranes, which were subject to environmental and productivity specifications, have ‘optimised’ hoisting speeds, explained Dick Eichhorn of Cargotec. This means slower, not faster, hoist speeds – while still meeting customer performance targets.

Lower speed means less initial installed power, so a lower power drain, fewer accidents, and a longer mechanism life and therefore lower maintenance costs, explained Mr Eichhorn.

On top of that, he said: “There’s no performance loss (in moves per hour) compared to the 75/150 m per minute hoisting speed nowadays often specified for post-panamax size cranes.”

In addition to the STS cranes which will be delivered in the second quarter of 2011, the customer has ordered more Kalmar equipment, including one DRF450-65S5 reachstacker, two DCF80-45E8 empty container handlers and one DCE80-6LB forklift.
