Cargotec companies Navis and Kalmar have won the contract to provide a fully-automated intermodal terminal solution for Australian import and export logistics services firm Qube’s Moorebank Logistics Park (MLP) in south-western Sydney.

The order, worth around €80m and booked into Cargotec’s order intake for second quarter 2018, includes the OneTerminal solution comprising Kalmar’s automated train handling, automated yard crane and horizontal transportation equipment and the Navis N4 terminal operating system (TOS).

The OneTerminal product will include four Kalmar automated stacking cranes, eight automated Kalmar rail-mounted gantry cranes and eight hybrid Kalmar FastCharge AutoShuttles and their charging stations.

Finnish company Kalmar and Navis, headquartered in the US, will also supply the necessary automation hardware and software for the terminal, including Navis N4, and the entire solution will be delivered by one project team and under a Kalmar OneTerminal contract.

The Australian MLP project, the world’s first fully-automated intermodal terminal according to Kalmar, aims to achieve a considerable ecological effect in its community through lowering terminal carbon dioxide emissions by using electrical container handling, but also through decreasing diesel truck traffic significantly around Sydney, and the OneTerminal solution will play a key part in helping customers reach this goal, according to Cargotec.

The manual operations at the Moorebank facility are due to start during first quarter 2019, with Kalmar deliveries set to begin during the second half of next year.

The Kalmar and Navis solution will be extended step by step, with the full setup anticipated to be operational in 2022.
