Callao, the largest container port on the west coast of the continent, is set to open April 2010 - a year ahead of schedule.

Proving the relentless growth in South America, the new terminal is to have a modern 650-metre-long quay terminal able to receive super post-panamax vessels. Further, it will have an annual capacity of 850,000 teu in its first phase, and a maximum capacity of about 1.4m teu in the second phase of development.

DP World is installing an operating system at Muelle Sur that, it is hoped, will help give a faster decision-making process as well as eliminating paperwork. The business intelligence modules of the Navis SPARCS N4 system "will help us make quicker decisions on the fly", said terminal manager Luis Turbides.
