Smart lighting saves on energy and maintenance
Smart option: The new LEDs at Jaxport’s Blount Island Marine Terminal have improved energy efficiency by 67%
Clever port lighting is expected to save one American port US$1.6m in energy and maintenance costs over the next decade.
The new LEDs at Jaxport’s Blount Island Marine Terminal in Florida have improved energy efficiency by 67% compared to typical metal halide equipment.
Among the other benefits the new system brings to the terminal is improved visibility. The LEDs provide light where it is needed without producing glare for workers.
The light quality is better because the system controls light with pinpoint precision preventing off-site glare and creating a uniform light in working areas.
They are also more efficiently controlled with dimming controls to adjust light levels when full output of the system is not needed.
Because the LEDs have a no touch warranty, maintenance and related costs have been eliminated for the next ten years, another clear saving for the port authority.
The installation of LEDS at Jaxport has been completed as part of a $100 million capital improvement plan to increase capacity.
They were installed as the port authority demolished and rebuilt 1,275 linear feet of docks and buildings to expand the area to hold new cranes.
