Smart infrastructure: VICT commenced operations in April 2017

ICTSI’s Victoria International Container Terminal (VICT) in Melbourne has been recognised for its smart infrastructure which may just help to ramp up commercial interest in automated terminals.

The newly built VICT at Webb Dock East in the Port of Melbourne is helping to bring the future of container operations to Australia, improving operational capacity and efficiency, as well improving the port’s ability to service larger capacity vessels.

Anders Dømmestrup, VICT CEO, said: “While still in the early stages of operation, the results and consistent improvement have been very promising, especially considering the challenges of ramping up productivity at automated terminals.”

“Moving forward, we are very confident that we will be able to achieve our target efficiency levels, which is the focal point of this whole project.”

The USD400 million automated terminal is the first of its kind in the ICTSI Group bringing much needed new capacity to Melbourne.

With a footprint of 35.4 hectares, VICT currently has a total of five Neo-Panamax robotic STS cranes and is able to handle up to 1 million standard containers annually. A phase 3 development would add an additional three cranes and boost capacity up to 1.8 million.

ICTSI admitted there were teething problems during start-up because of slow stevedoring operations, systems and equipment, causing longer-than-desired service times. But these were apparently ironed out by the time the terminal commenced full operations in April 2017.

VICT won the annual National Infrastructure Award organised by Infrastructure Partnerships Australia, fighting off competition from five other projects including the Sydney Airport Integrated Operations Centre, The Mega Train Project in Newcastle and the UBERZones project in Melbourne.
