Latin America box traffic reverses declines

Recently released figures from the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL) show that regional ports boosted container traffic by 6.7% in the first quarter of 2017.

This reverses the slowdown in activity reported in 2016, with strong container throughput growth in eight countries. These were Nicaragua (22.1%), Panama (12.6%), Mexico (10.0%), Chile (10.0%), Peru (8.2%), Dominican Republic (38.8%), Guatemala (6.9%) and Honduras (7.7%).

Uruguay (2.7%), Brazil (1.4%), Costa Rica (1.2%) and El Salvador (1%) posted lesser growth.

Three countries saw negative growth: Colombia (-4.7%), Argentina (9.1%) and Ecuador (-6.1%).

The ports where traffic increased the fastest were: Caucedo (54%), Haina (18%), Suape (31%), Puertos Barrios (29.5%), Colón (26.4%), Valparaíso (21.9%), Paita (18.2%), Callao (7.3%), Veracruz (13.5%), Manzanillo (10.3%) and Altamira (9.9).

Those with the largest decreases were Guayaquil (-6.1%), Buenos Aires (-9.1%), Paranaguá (-7.3%) and Buenaventura (-1.5%), respectively in Ecuador, Argentina, Brazil and Colombia.
