Being Being part of the most important infrastructure project in Costa Rica
In 2017, the US office of ShibataFenderTeam delivered 55 nos. CSS 1450 Cell Fender Systems (G2.0), 8 nos. CSS 630 Cell Fender Systems and several Bollards to the new APM Container Terminal in the Caribbean port of Moín, Cost Rica.
The consortium Van Oord/BAM International was awarded with the highly complex construction of the new terminal and marine access, and APM Terminals will operate the terminal for at least 30 years. The scheduled opening is in February 2019, after starting the construction work in 2015 with the creation of an 80 hectare artificial island in the open sea, close to Límon. The old port did not allow to make optimum use of the demand as long queues of vessels and a resulting loss of business showed. The new APM Terminal will optimize the container throughput: container ships up to 8,500 TEUs can be handled 24/7, 365 days of the year. The terminal is designed to serve the largest vessels entering the Latin American trades, and is focusing on reefer container traffic through which fresh fruit is now quicker and more efficiently transported to North America and Europe.
The construction of the new container terminal is the most important infrastructure project for Costa Rica, helping the country to reposition itself with the most efficient port in Central America. With this investment and long term operational contract, APM Terminals enables Costa Rica´s future economic growth.
