Fremantle oil spill clean-up under control

Responders used skimmer equipment to recover the oil, which had been leaked from and contained around the general cargo ship Nauma, by three separate containment booms.

On 13 January, workers focused on removing residual oil still behind the containment booms around Nauma, located at Berth 11 at the north-eastern end of the harbour, and assessed the impact on the berth infrastructure and how the remaining oil could be cleaned.

Authorities previously said they were confident the oil was within the containment booms and predominantly held underneath the berth. Divers also confirmed no further oil was leaking from the source on the ship and other technical monitoring was also put in place.

No oil was believed to have moved upstream.

Assistance was provided by the Department of Transport and other authorities.

The port continued operations throughout the incident and the harbour has remained open to passing recreational vessels.
