New sustainability era

Modern Terminals has announced its sustainability strategy that includes decarbonisation goals in its own operations to eliminate direct greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030, and become carbon neutral by 2050.

Five sustainability pillars

The strategy includes long-term goals for all its five sustainability pillars – Corporate Governance, People, Health & Safety, Environment, and Community Involvement – providing a clear roadmap for the ongoing sustainability journey of the container terminal operator that has facilities in Hong Kong and Western Shenzhen.

To achieve the decarbonisation goals, Modern Terminals will introduce renewable energy at its facilities and plans to electrify all container handling equipment and yard vehicles. A total of 291 solar panels will be installed on the rooftop of Modern Terminals’ warehouse building, with an area of approximately 1,000 square metres. The installation is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter this year. Upon completion, the system will generate about 140,000 units (kWh) of electricity each year and can help reduce 51,800 kg of carbon emission per year.

Other long-term goals cover material topics including technology and automation, supply chain management, green finance, diversity and inclusion, health, safety and wellness for employees and contractor workers, and community engagement.
