FEPORT on greenhouse emissions

The congress, which was hosted by the Ports of Copenhagen and Malmo, gave the opportunity for experts to illustrate practical solutions for the reduction of greenhouse emissions.

Lamia Kerdjoudj-Belkaid, FEPORT secretary general, said: “ Our industry is proactive, the major container terminal operations in the EU have created a voluntary methodology which allows container terminals to calculate their CO2 emissions on a periodical basis.”

FEPORT explained that its members are constantly investing in green and energy efficient equipment.

“Our members are not only convinced that this is good for the environment but also that their investments are, on the long term, profitable for their companies,” Ms Kerdjoudj-Belkaid added.

She continued: “We will not be successful in reducing greenhouse emissions if other parties of the chain do not involve themselves too.”

FEPORT called for all actors of the maritime logistics chain to commit and was hopeful that EU policy makers would support industry initiatives to give priority to the implementation of existing environmental legislation.
