Shekou’s Green Terminal

The trial results were successful resulting in the “RTG Enhancement Project” in mid 2007, now central to SCT’s ‘green terminal’ practice. Phase II of SCT’s ‘eRTG Project’ has been accomplished, and marks another significant milestone towards a fully ‘Green Terminal’. SCT now has 32 modified container yards, with a total area of 250,000 square metres. 60 eRTG units, 80% of its RTGs systems, have now been converted from diesel-powered to electricity from the city’s electric power supply. To commemorate the project achievement, a ceremony was held on 16th December, attended by representatives from the Communications and Environmental Protection of Shenzhen Municipality and Shenzhen Electric Power Corporation Since the upgrade the operational eRTGs save power and energy and emits less noise and lower emission. Oil consumption for an eRTG can be reduced to 100,000 litres per year – with the 60 upgraded eRTGs, oil consumption has been reduced by 3,000 tons annually and the emission minimized by 90%. Phases III & IV are still in process, which aim to be completed during 2009, when the project scope will be further extended to another 38 container yards. After project completion, SCT energy consumption should be reduced by 30%, saving an estimated 40 to 50 Million RMB per year.
