Report on Green Ship Technologies

The discussion, held in Singapore, followed the success of a previous round-table in the UK about whether the green approach to shipping could be profitable.

With ships being one of the most efficient forms of transport for mass goods there is a growing concern about the environmental state of the world’s ocean and air.

Shipping routes and ports have led steps to tackle the issue, such as equipment, products and new legislation.

As well as the provision of incentives to ship owners who adopt energy efficient ship designs that reduce fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. These include a 50% reduction of Initial Registration Fees (IRF) and a 20% rebate on Annual Tonnage Tax (ATT).

The round table discussion picked up on these and questioned whether ships can comply with the legislation and reap the benefits.

It covered what technologies, products and operating measures currently exist and what is on the horizon for both ports and ship owners alike.
