Mangalore port makes ‘eco-friendly’ list
New Mangalore Port, one of the major ports in Karnataka, India, has been named as an eco-friendly port thanks to a number of ongoing initiatives.
The port, which has been certified to ISO 14001 standard since 2011, planted 15,000 saplings in the port area this year, set up mechanical sprinkling on concrete roads inside the port area and deployed more tankers to sprinkle water to suppress dust in a bid to combat pollution.
Dr P Tamilvanan, chairman, New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT), said in a statement: “I, on behalf of NMPT, hereby place on record the sincere support and cooperation extended by my officers, staff, workers, trade union leaders, trustees, port users and the print and electronic media for the overall development of New Mangalore Port.”
“I extend my gratitude for their sincere efforts in making this port on of the best major ports,” he added.
Among the port’s future project to battle pollution is the development of a regasification LNG terminal. The port has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Mitsui for a feasibility study for a terminal of 2-3 million metric tonne per annum (MMTPA) capacity, expandable to 5 MMTPA.
It also has plans to develop a port-based special economic zone (SEZ).
As a reuslt, the port earned the Green Tech Award for Environment in the port sector in 2012 and the Aranya Mitra Award in 2013 from the Government of Karnataka.
